tracking or camber?

Morning All


Got to work in my No 239 yesterday to here a hsising noise as I walked away - puncture at front- bugger

Put the spare in at lunchtime to find the puncture was due to the inner edge wearing down to the core and 2/3rds of the tyre had split - no wonder it was flat!
At the service 4k ago the dealer flagged inner edge wear but the tracking had been done not long before

so big question tracking or camber - any suggestions so I don't get some grease monkey tugging my crown jewels at lunchtime as to what it is when I get the front 2 tyres replaced.
If needs setting up proerly any sugegstions of places around cambridge

I think the story is "they all do that sir" in broad terms, however, having has my whole suspension re-set c10K miles ago, there is no doubt that this is reduced when things are in correct alignment - and of course the handling is as you would wish it to be, too.

Having now found these guys I would have no hesitation in advising you to speak to Wheels In Motion in Chesham (Google is your friend)in the first instance. These guys really know their stuff and their advice is freely given. They have transformed the handling of my new MX5 for £95 ex VAT using the most impressive kit I've ever seen. Not often I give such an unqualified recommendation, but I think they're worth it.

If it's too far for you to travel (and I'd urge you to seriously consider it) then they will recommend someone closer to you who they trust to take care of you.

I think on the standard Corsa Tyre we've all had inner excessive tyre wear :sweatingbullets:

Updated update, as it were:

Did one of my 300 miles jaunts in Wales yesterday. What a massive difference over previously - understeer has almost comletely disappeared, even on greasy roads. I can stick the front end into a corner with confidence knowing it will, well, stick really.

Moral of the story, proper alignment = happy driving. Not sure of the cost for this service, but a good lesson learnt (and for those buying RBs, perhaps a point of negotiation on purchase?

I tend to disagree with the "they all do it" or "its the fault of the Pirelli Corsas"!! :unknw:

I reckon the standard factory set up of the car is poor .... I had the geometry done on mine just after I got the car, and its now done just under 7K miles with the same tyres on the front, with no signs of "excessive" wear!! :wink:

Also depends on how aggressive a set up you go with .... would totally agree with Mr BFB about taking time to find someone to set the car up properly though, and knows what they are doing with these cars .... makes all the difference!! :good:

I can highly recommend Carnetix in Melton Mowbray for all things Subaru including a full geometry setup, (camber, castor, tracking, etc).. I had my geometry altered there to dial out the inner tyre wear issue.
They will discuss your setup requirements, i.e fast road/track setup, with you beforehand and do a thorough job.

As said, the set up you go for will make a big difference to your tyre wear .... not just getting it set up properly in the first place!! :wink:

I had a "fast road" set up (basically Prodrive settings) on my RB5 and the car was brilliant, but the wear on the inner edges of the tyres was a bit heavier than normal, but certainly no excessive.

When I got the 320 set up (by the same people) after I bought it, I asked for whatever setup was going to be kindest on the tyres!! :sweatingbullets:

Ive ended up with a setup somewhere between standard and "fast road", and have to say the car feels good, and the tyre wear is not an issue!! :good:

Your setup seems to be about the same as mine Norm. . One trait i did notice with the prodrive settings was that the car would turn in very quick on slower tight corners but on high speed bends and straights, the slightest twitch on the steering wheel would result in the car wanting to veer offline. The setup i have now in much smoother around the corners as opposed to jerking it around in stages.

I had the same problem on my STI 8 with the standard Bridgstone RE070's going on the inside edge, The car was set up with the Prodrive geometry settings which are great if you either use the car on track or are constantly giving it the beans on the twisties.

But if your driving style is a bit more relaxed or involves a lot of motorway or dual carrigeway driving the Prodrive settings will destroy your tyres inside edge at an alarming rate.

I'm Think the RB's were set up with the prodrive settings as standard.

Another point .... when a tyre starts to wear unevenly due to a tracking / geometry problem it generally continue to wear uneven even after the problem is rectifyed

My rule is get the geometry checked when you put new rubber on and also is there has been any work done on the suspension (the old strut top problem)
That was where i think a lot of my problems stemed from on the STI 8 (It had all 4 struts done under warranty) and never realy stopped eating tyres till i put the 18" PFF7's with Toyo R888's on and got the geometry re done.

Incidently i done over 14,000 miles on the 888's and fronts were just getting close to the wear indicators when i sold it... not bad for a soft / track tyre Posted Image

Yep, ive been told that as well!! :sad:

I changed the RB wheels today for my winter set of 17's, and have to say the tyres are fine .... rears are near perfect obviously, the front passengers side is showing a bit more wear on both edges (as is usually the case with any car) but both fronts are fine and are showing no real signs of the inside edges going .... thankfully. The car is on 6800 miles with the same tyres on the front since new!! :good:
